Broadcasting their futures

With the help of Jane Bellis, I’ve been lucky enough to take the Broadcasting Students in a creative Careers session.  This followed on from a session delivered by Jessica Henderson and Karen Lennox earlier on this term, where Sally Harrison’s first year students looked at their lives and how they had arrived where they are now, the decisions they have made and challenges they faced.

I then took them from the present to the future by asking them to think about what they would like to do in their futures by using a pictorial representation – meaning the ‘Blue Peter’ style sticking and gluing was needed! With magazines, newspapers and leaflets, the students pulled out pictures and headlines, drew links between their short and long term goals and then discussed their representations in pairs.

Understanding that there was no right or wrong answer allowed students to think creatively and come up with visual representations of their future. Reflecting on this, students said it ‘surprised them how much it opened up their thoughts’, that they ‘need to stand out from the crowd’ , ‘get more work experience’, and to ‘try things out…you never know what you’ll discover’.

The group worked really hard and should have some concrete ideas on what to work on next.
